New York Public Library - Science, Industry & Business
The New York Public Library's Science, Industry & Business Library (SIBL) on 34th Street, features 33 foot tall columns that are clad with epoxy terrazzo, in addition to walls and flooring. The library is housed in the former B. Altman Department Store, a landmarked building. The Architect was the well-known Gwathmey and Siegel Firm, and designed a space that perfectly combines function and beauty. A stainless steel and terrazzo staircase elevators lead down from the entrance lobby to the Research Library. This project won numerous awards, including the 2001 AIA Award of Merit, the 1996 Record Enterios, Architectural Record & the 1997 AIA/ALA Library Building Award. (The famous Healy Hall is pictured).
